Michael attended Christian Brothers High School, Memphis, Tennessee. He earned an Electrical Engineering Degree at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He served as a LT in the United States Navy aboard the USS Russell County (LST-100) and at the Concord Naval Weapons Station in California.
He earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. His career spanned over 40 years primarily in military base and facility management. Including Missile Tracking Stations in the Bahamas, the Churchill Rocket Research Range in Canada, the Nuclear Rocket Development Station, Nevada, JFK Airport, US Naval Station in Bay St. Louis, Kings Bay Naval Station, and the Arnold Air Force Base in Tullahoma, TN.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Anneva, with whom he shared a surviving daughter, Michele Crumpton (Tim Crumpton) and son, John McKinnon, and grandson, Ian (Mac) Britt (Michelle Britt). He is also survived by his two great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Britt and Russell Britt.
His sister, Jeanne Levasseur, survives him along with his nieces Jeanne Marie Barrow, Betty Ann Kelsch and nephews Darrell Levasseur, Camille Levasseur, and Michael Levasseur and their families.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Day McKinnon. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Betty Richland; her son, John Chenney, survives him along with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Martha, to whom he was married for 22 years. Along with his marriage to Martha came additional family members that have survived him, Amy and Robert Cheek, Bradley and Anne Williams, Danielle and BJ Hunt, Maria and Tyler Edgeworth, Matt and Sammy Williams, Jennifer Williams and their families. Michael was loved and respected for his kind nature, his outgoing and welcoming personality, his sense of humor and his devotion to his faith. He loved to read and was very interested in history as well as current events. He enjoyed collecting stamps and coins. He held a Ham Radio License and to his last day could tap out a message in morse code. He and Martha traveled together across the United States as well as Switzerland and Italy. They shared unforgettable experiences from the beauty of Sedona, Arizona to the grandeur of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. They were devoted to each other .
He was a loving husband and father and DeeDaddy to his grandson and great-grandchildren. And he was “Uncle Mike” to many other family members.
His life was well lived and he will be greatly missed.
