Alma Juanita Baker received her angel wings on Sunday, October 29, 2017, just 20 days from her 104th birthday. She was born November 17, 1913 in Bristow, Oklahoma to Albert Eckley Brake and Maida Eliza Rooffener Brake. Her Grandfather Rooffener worked in the mines in Alma, Colorado and Grandmother Rooffener wanted the name Alma on her birth record. However, all who knew her lovingly called her Sister, Juanita, Nita, Aunt Nita, Mrs. Baker, and Mama.
Always a sparkle in her eye, full of fun and feisty, saw good in everyone and she loved being outdoors. Whatever she planted grew and flourished and those loved by her also grew and flourished. She was a telephone operator working at the McAllen, Texas Phone Company when James Richard Baker saw her and was smitten. They were married September 1, 1931, had three children, and many adventures for 69 years.
The Baker home was open to all at all times. There was always great visiting, meals, and always a dessert, whipped up from scratch in no time at all. Her seamstress abilities were unmatched.
She was preceded in death by her husband James Richard Baker; father Albert Eckley Brake; mother Maida Eliza Rehmers; brothers Denver Theodore, Billy Leroy and John Albert.
Juanita is survived by sisters Alene Valentine Lewis and Ucele Rosenboom; children Sonya Lea Ackerman, James Richard Baker Jr. and Rebecca Ann (David) Brake; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren; as well as many loving nieces and nephews and friends who will miss her sparkling eyes and smiling face.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, November 6th at Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, 112 N 9th St., Payette with her viewing being held there from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, November 5th. Condolences may be made to Juanita’s family at www.shaffer-jensenchapel.com.
