Susan Kay Kaplan-Williams joined our Father in Heaven on August 25, 2021. She’s survived by her brother Dennis Kaplan (Joyce), sister-in-law Margaret Kaplan, daughter Leah Anna Covington (Corey), son Scooter Williams (Kathleen), bonus daughter Susan Sharpe (Chris), grandchildren Christean Covington (Marion), Kendyll Covington, Corey James Covington, Jr., Cameron Covington, Reagan Henley (Blake), Trey Williams (Abby), Ethan Williams, Evelyn Williams, Rebekah Williams, Abigail Williams, Shelby Wells, and Courtney Sharpe, and nieces Beth Kronbeck, Teresa Kaplan, Kerrin Kaplan, Donna Bender, and Kristin Sekafatz, and her cats Bibsi and Bandit.
Mom, Gramma, Gigi was a big, bold, larger-than-life blessing to all who knew her. Anyone who met her would instantly know that she loved her kids and grandkids fiercely. She was their loudest cheerleader, and fiercest protector. If you were fortunate enough to be her friend, she would become the same for you. Susan had several passions outside of her family, including education, serving on the San Jacinto Foundation Board and nominating committee, and the HSLR Go Texan Scholarship committee. She also loved the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, serving on various committees and teams over 40 years, as well as appearing as Giggles the Rodeo Clown, and earning the Lifetime Member Award. She became a rabid Cougar fan when she earned her degree from the University of Houston at the age of 52, majoring in Journalism, which she immediately put to use as a sports writer for the UH Daily Cougar. She worked as a technical writer, speech writer, and change management consultant for various companies over the last 20 years. Susan was a motivational speaker, a columnist for several local publications, wrote children’s books, and would read to elementary classes as her alter ego Aunty Suzie.
Susan had a love of travel, and her sense of adventure would take her anywhere from working in India for 6 months, to taking her teenage grandsons to a local fair and riding the roller coaster, to attending a military New Year’s Eve ball with her son’s best friend. She made it a priority to attend every graduation or special event of her grandchildren.
Susan defined living out loud. She was a consummate social butterfly, and her infectious laughter filled the room. She never met a wine she didn’t like! She played cards once a week, she learned how to sail, and even began participating in ride-alongs with the local police department.
Our mother filled our lives with love, laughter, and energy. We always knew where we stood with her, and that was first in her heart. Our grandkids had the best Gramma & Gigi in the world, and even she would tell you that!
In honor of her love of education, we have a set up a scholarship in the name of Susan Kaplan-Williams at San Jacinto College. In lieu of flowers we ask to please donate through the link below and specify in the comment section, Susan Kaplan-Williams Memorial Scholarship.
