On the afternoon of February 9, 2015, Poppa passed away peacefully of natural causes at the Kindred Hospital of Clear Lake in Webster, Texas. Poppa would have been 88 years old on February 24. He was born on February 24, 1927 in New Boston, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents Dewey and Lorene Wilkerson SR and his older sister Helen Bevill. He lived his childhood mostly in De Queen, Arkansas doing what young kids do, fishing, hunting, swimming, going to school and enjoying life. He helped his parents run Dewey’s Diner during WW2 during his early teens. At age 17 he joined the Navy to do his patriotic duty. He was assigned duty on the USS Lexington for the duration of WW2 from January 3, 1945 to July 23, 1946. After the war he joined the Army and served from November 1947 until March 1954. He then transferred to the Air Force and retired in November 1968. During Poppa’s career with the service they traveled to many states actually visiting every state in the United States. Both Poppa and Mom loved to travel. After his retirement they moved to Pasadena, Texas and then to La Porte, Texas to be close to his family.
He is survived by his lovely wife of 66 years, Geraldine L. Wilkerson and their 2 children, Gary L. Wilkerson (wife Cynthia) and Don A. Wilkerson (wife Jennie) both from La Porte, Texas. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He has five grandchildren, Greg Wilkerson (wife Robin), Cheryl Patrick (husband Kai), Krystal Wilkerson, Kayla Wilkerson and Don Wilkerson Jr. He also has 4 great grandchildren, Austin Patrick, Haley Wilkerson, Tyler Patrick and Brady Wilkerson. Poppa was always happy to be with his family.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2015 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Grand View Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Friday, February 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Grand View Funeral Home, 8501 Spencer Hwy, Pasadena, Texas.
Pallbearers are Greg Wilkerson, Kai Patrick, Don Wilkerson Jr, Terry Bryant, Randy Hughlett and Leo Martinez.
