Numerous family and friends will mourn his passing.
Alfred was a true man of the earth and one of the hardest workers you could ever meet. He joined the Pipefitters Local Union 211 in 1948 where he was given the name “Jr” because he was the youngest member. To this day union brothers call him “Jr”. He was a proud union member for 73 years. He also started his own fabricating business, A. H. Hairgrove Company Inc, that built various piping, storage tanks, and other structural fabrication. His company also owned and rented out many welding machines. No piece of metal was too small to save “in case he needed it later”. And more times than not, he needed it later. He could never have enough welding leads, hand tools, power tools or chain. Grey kakis and blue denim shirts with blue jeans were his clothes of choice.
Alfred loved his dog Tyler Bing, his chickens, and his garden. Nothing could be planted in his yard if it wasn’t fruit or nut bearing. He would eat no fruit without planting the seed afterwards. We are still finding seeds hidden in drawers. You think I’m lying? (That was his favorite question lol). From Son-In-Law, Dave Mauk, when the girls brought a new boyfriend home Alfred would raise his welding hood and just stare with intimidation. Then he would shake your hand and welcome you.
Alfred purchased two lots in Pasadena Texas in 1952 where he built a large, detached garage with a bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen. This was the family residence while he built a beautiful home for his family. This was his residence for 62 years.
Alfred was very generous in every way. Many churches in the Pasadena area, including the First Baptist Church, proudly display the large metal crosses he built and donated on their roofs or towers. There are numerous metal structures around the city that he designed and built that will remain for many years to come.
All his neighbors and friends can speak to the many times he helped them out of a jam or fixed the many things they couldn’t. Alfred would not accept payment from any of them. Alfred would truly give you the shirt off his back. He did not know how to say no to anyone. His tractor was the tow truck of the neighborhood, and sometimes the city.
The family would like to thank New Light Hospice for taking incredible care of Alfred during his final days. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.
