Alton Kenneth (AK) Love went to see the Supreme Architect on May 5, 2017. AK’s wife, Imogene (Jean) Vella Oliver Love, of 55 years and 18 years preceded him in death. AK leaves sons Mark and Alan Love and two grandsons, Aiden and Challenger Love, and a dearly loved daughter-in-law, Devin Love, Mark’s wife.
AK was born in Embry, Webster County, Mississippi, moved to Missouri in 1943. He was a member of the Southern Baptist Church.
AK entered the USAF 6th of July 1951, discharged 7th of July 1955. Duties were Air Craft Crew Chief in Japan, Korea, Philippines, Vietnam, and within the USA. This was one of his career highlights.
The other was with NASA, 20 January 1962 – 20 April 1990. These years were spent as a Quality Assurance Representative, starting with Mercury #4, the Gemini Program, at McDonnell Aircraft. Then to Houston, TX, MSC, changed to JSC. Later, the Apollo Program, Sky Lab, the Shuttle Program, and the Medical Science Branch. AK spent three months in Moscow, Russia for compatibility checks with Russian / USA Apollo – Soyuz Docking Program. He spent several years as a Test Subject at JSC, Altitude Chamber, Neutral Buoyance Water Facility and the 707 “0 G” aircraft.
AK’s marriage to beautiful Imogene, his one and only true love on 20 July 1956 was the highlight of his life. AK sorely missed her presence in his remaining years.
AK’s sons were a source of pride for him. They provided many points of interest and excitement. It seemed like forever for them to finally pick a career field. You guys have done well.
AK and Jean enjoyed short trips to nowhere in Texas, being sure to stay away from tourist attractions. After retirement the trips were more important than the destination. The back roads and state highways were the most enjoyable. This was another of their private and precious times together.
AK belonged to several fraternal organizations: Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, the San Jacinto Shrine Club, American Legion Post #521 and the Post Memorial Team, the 40 & 8, and the assorted activities of each organizations.
The most rewarding volunteer item was the privilege of being a member of the Galveston Shriner Children’s Burn Hospital as a driver for the Transportation Corps. This unit provided patients transport to and from busses, trains, and planes to the hospital. It was a most rewarding position. After 9-11-01, his Jean spent many miles and hours riding with him.
AK leaves so many friends and he has so enjoyed their company.
For God, County, and my Family.
In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made to Galveston Shriner Children’s Burn Hospital at 815 Market St Galveston, TX 77550.
