It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Russell Preston, age 85, who left this world surrounded by his beloved family after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. John entered the world in East Vancouver, where he was born to George and Hazel Preston, and he departed as he lived—full of life, unmistakably vibrant, and surrounded by love.
John is predeceased by his brothers George and Don, as well as his sisters Joan, Mary, and Geraldine (Geri), who was the mother of his two sons. He is survived by his devoted wife Roxy, his sons Mike (Shelley) and Travis (Jessica), and his stepdaughter Lisa (Matt). He was a proud grandfather to Hailey, Michael Jr., Tyler, and step-granddaughters Katie and Juliane. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Lucian, Delilah, and Nico. Additionally, he leaves behind his sister-in-law Venice Preston and numerous nieces and nephews across Canada and the USA.
A true sports enthusiast, John’s love for athletics began in his youth, playing in the parks of East Vancouver. He continued to pursue his passion throughout his life, playing senior hockey and slow pitch in Nanaimo and Parksville.
John was an athlete in every sense; he graduated from King Edward High School, where he excelled in football, later winning championships with the Vancouver Blue Bombers in 1958. He also played rugby for CYO and the Meraloma Club from 1963 to 1967, even embarking on a memorable journey to Europe in 1965. In his later years, John appreciated Doug Picard’s boxing program in Parksville that helped him remain active.
Professionally, John had a varied and fulfilling career. He began at BCIT, where he managed the computer center and taught night school courses, while also coaching the rugby team. His expertise later led him to Wilkinson Steel in the computer division, and eventually, he took on the role of Registrar at Malaspina College in Nanaimo, followed by a position as manager at a busy Nanaimo law firm.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Trepess and Dr. Coyle for their compassionate care and support during John’s battle with Parkinson’s disease.
John’s spirit, love for life, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends will be deeply missed.
Rest in peace, John. You will forever be remembered in our hearts.
