Hector Charles Porter, fondly known as Chuck, a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2024. Chuck was preceded in death by his loving wife of 31 years, Ann, who departed in 2022 and his big sister, Laura, who left us in 2023. He is survived by his little brother, Larry, his three adoring daughters: April Bawden (Mike) , Sandra Porter (Scott) , and Leslie Klassen (Steve), and his nieces and nephews. Chuck leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, enriched by his grandchildren, Christopher, Jacob (Katelynn), Benjamin, and Hannah, as well as his great-grandchildren, Kynzie and Lennon.
Born in Saskatchewan on October 12, 1934, to Charles and Hilda Porter, Chuck eventually found his way to Manitoba where he had an illustrious career with Quality Records, and his love for music blossomed. He shared this passion with his family and friends, creating lasting memories through shared melodies and epic bonfires on the farm in Teulon.
After a visit to Vancouver Island, Chuck fell in love with the beauty of the west coast and made the move from his beloved Manitoba to the coastal beauty of Parksville, BC, in 1981, where he successfully ran three dry cleaners, becoming a respected member of the local business community.
Among his many joys in life, Chuck found solace in his winter trips with Ann to Yuma and the annual June fishing expeditions in Manitoba. These adventures brought him closer to nature and allowed him to create lasting bonds with family and friends. Chuck could spend hours watching a dragonfly hatch on the dock at Brereton Lake.
Chuck had a zest for life that was contagious, and he had a knack for spreading laughter wherever he went. One memorable old saying, "Take a long walk off a short pier," captured his playful spirit and quick wit, endearing him to all who knew him.
In addition to his love for music and adventure, Chuck enjoyed the simple pleasures of reading and playing solitaire. These quiet pastimes brought him moments of relaxation and reflection. During his last few years at The Gardens of Qualicum Beach, he was usually found to be napping or playing cards by the fire, always ready for a visit with anyone who felt like
chatting.
In remembrance of Chuck, let us reflect on the poem by Mosiah Lyman Hancock that he held dear:
"When I come to the end of my journey
And I travel my last weary mile,
Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned
And remember only the smile.
Forget unkind words I have spoken;
Remember some good I have done.
Forget that I ever had heartache
And remember I've had loads of fun.
Forget that I've stumbled and blundered
And sometimes fell by the way.
Remember I have fought some hard battles
And won, ere the close of the day,
Then forget to grieve for my going,
I would not have you sad for a day,
But in summer just gather some flowers
And remember the place where I lay
And come in the shade of evening
When the sun paints the sky in the west,
Stand for a few moments beside me
And remember only my best."
In addition to his family and friends, Chuck's journey was supported by numerous care professionals who provided compassion and support along the way. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated caregivers at Island Health and NRGH, whose expertise and kindness eased Chuck's path during his times of need. And of course, his "Monday Fun Day" friends at the Adult Day Program were a highlight of every week! Thank you to Stacy and Colleen for treating our dad like he was your own.
Special recognition goes to the compassionate team at The Gardens of Qualicum Beach, whose unwavering care and support provided comfort and solace to Chuck and his loved ones. In particular, the family would like to express profound appreciation to Shery for her exceptional care and genuine compassion, which brought light to Chuck's days and touched the hearts of all who knew him.
Chuck's presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace, forever remembered for the warmth of his smile, the light of his laughter, and the gentle spirit that touched so many lives. We love you, Gramps!
