Dorothy passed away on May 19, 2022 in the Nanaimo General Hospital at the age of 88. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister Audrey Smith, grandchildren Courtney Meeker (Joaquin) and Jordan Meeker; her “bratty daughter” Lisa Stockton (children Jacob and Zack), nieces Suzanne Doig, Fay Bend, Judy Schnurr, Carol Dorn, Tina Dillon and Debbie Lewicki as well as nephews Mark Joanis, Edward Bend and Ron Bend, as well as many great-nieces and nephews. Dorothy will also be missed by her close family friend and “son”, Blair Shinski. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, John and Edith English, her sister, Evelyn Joanis, her husband Eric and her beloved daughter, Donna Meeker.
Dorothy was born in Vernon, BC in 1934. She was the second oldest of three sisters. As a child, Dorothy moved multiple times with her family, as her father's search for work took them to British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. After school, Dorothy moved to Calgary and worked at the Bay in the meat department, which was where she met Eric. After many years in Medicine Hat where they operated the Husky Truck Stop and raised their daughter, they eventually moved to Vancouver Island to run the Log Cabin restaurant, then retired and enjoyed their grandchildren and friends.
Dorothy loved to laugh and enjoyed life to the fullest. She had many health issues over her life including polio, which she fought for over 3 years and defied the odds of walking again. She also battled cancer and once again, her strong determined attitude helped her survive and never take life for granted. She loved to socialize and spent the last few years of her life building strong, close friendships with many people in the Nanaimo/Parksville area. You could always hear Dorothy laughing or see her rolling her eyes when someone made her laugh. She loved to go to Value Village, Red Apple and would use those times to truly get to know the people she encountered. Any one who knew Dorothy loved her spirit, her spunk and her devilish smile.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at Nanaimo General Hospital who supported Dorothy in her final days and for Yates Memorial for their kindness and support to our family
