Lillian Jo Hickman, age 88, passed away in her home on January 10, 2018. She was born February 8, 1929 in Lazare, Texas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Settles. She grew up in Quanah, Texas, where she was valedictorian at Quanah High School in 1946.
She attended Texas Wesleyan College on scholarship for two years, and then received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from East Texas State College.
She married Charlie Guynn Hickman in 1949. He preceded her in death in 1995 after forty six years of devotion and caring.
Lillian taught history at Paris Junior College for seven years and at North Lamar High School for twenty years.
She was a member of Calvary Methodist Church and the Wesleyan Sunday School class.
Lillian was known as a wonderful, caring, and masterful teacher. Despite the obstacle of gradually losing her sight, she continued teaching. She was dedicated to helping her students not only learn about the subject, but also to think for themselves and to pursue knowledge and meaningful endeavors. She had a sharp and inquiring mind, and was always eager to discuss the deeper issues of life.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandparent—always loving, supportive, interested, and encouraging. She enjoyed her hilltop home (which she had designed), and delighted in the evening sunsets there. The appreciation of all things beautiful, especially in nature, was an important legacy that she left. Another was the example of counting her blessings, even in difficult circumstances.
Her sister, Nina Littleton, preceded her in death in 1977. She is survived by her two children, Mary Ann Brown of San Antonio, Texas, (married to Lt. Gen. (ret) Richard E. Brown, III), and Dan Roquemore Hickman of Plano, Texas, (married to Allison Britton Short). Lillian is also survived and much beloved by her five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren—Mary Ann’s children are Stephanie Hurlbert (wife of Brig Gen (USAF) Jeffrey Hurlbert) of Manassas, VA, and their children—Gabriel, Hannah Grace, Abigail, Jacob, Rebekah, Sarah Faith, and Victoria; Lt. Col.(USAF) Bethany McCarthy(wife of Lt. Col. (USAF) Michael McCarthy), both stationed in South Korea, and their daughter, and namesake, Lillian; and Richard E. Brown, IV (married to Kayla Reid). Dan’s children are Andrew Roquemore Hickman and Abigail Britton Hickman.
