James Paul Stern was born October 19, 1942 in Adams, Minnesota to Erwin and Irma (Drews) Stern. Jim was the youngest of seven children, brothers Eugene and Wayne Stern, and sisters Ardath Stohr, Janet Ozawa, Ruth Ulenhop, and Bernita Dahl.
Jim graduated from Adams High School and then attended Austin Minnesota Tech for two years. In 1961, Jim married Marilyn Hanson with whom he had four children, Gina Schochenmaier, Christopher Stern, Amy Monzingo, and Michael Stern.
Jim began his career with the FW Woolworth Company in St. Paul, MN. Following a stop in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Jim and his family moved to Omaha, NE in 1972 where he worked as store manager of the Woolco Department Store at 84th and Center Streets. After the store’s closing, Jim and Marcy Gottsch opened Sunrise Lawn and Garden in 1983 and continued the owning the business until 2011. Jim and Marcy were married in 1983 and had two children together, Matthew and Katherine Stern.
Jim enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved Nebraska Cornhusker sports and the Minnesota Vikings. Jim spent much of his time enjoying nature, be it sitting on the deck and watching sunsets and moonrises, tending the vegetable garden and fruit trees, or marveling at his many hosta beds.
Jim is survived by wife Marcy and children: Gina Schochenmaier (Randy), Christoper Stern (Denny), Amy Monzingo, Michael Stern, Matthew Stern, and Katherine Stern. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren: Jennifer Johnson (Ryan), Timothy Barone, Elizabeth Monzingo, Jacqueline Monzingo, Taylor Stern, Tanner Stern, and Taryn Stern. His great grandchildren include: Alexandria, Aubriella, and Elijah Johnson; and Anthony and Alexis Barone. Lastly, Jim is survived by brother-in-laws Richard Gottsch (Patricia) and Gary Gottsch (Karen) as well as many nieces and nephews.
