Alice Andrews Clopton passed away peacefully on October 14, 2022, at age 82 in Omaha at the end of a fruitful life spent as a devoted wife and mother, a proud grandmother, a caring sister, and close friend to a fortunate many.
Alice is survived by her husband, Wilbur, sons David (Deanna) and Richard (Deb); grandsons Christopher, Ellis, and Miles; and sister Ginger Clemens (Mike). She was preceded in death by son John, and parents Rev. Ellis and Sue Andrews.
Born the daughter of a Methodist preacher on July 8, 1940, Alice quickly learned the value in community through her father’s church congregations. Her family moved to Pensacola, where she met Wilbur Clopton at church while in high school. She earned a degree in Recreation Administration from Florida State University in 1961 and became the Director of the Recreation Center in Gainesville as its director. On July 2, 1961, she married Wilbur and began 61 years of happy marriage. She and Wilbur raised two sons and seven dogs over the course of their life together while they moved around the country, as the Air Force assigned Wilbur to new bases and duties. With each move, Alice engaged the community as a volunteer for the American Red Cross teaching CPR, First Aid, and EMT training courses or serving as a Physical Education instructor for the local school.
A grandchild’s visit to Granny and Bubba’s always began with a bright smile and a warm hug from Alice and ended with another hug, a kiss on the forehead, and a tightly folded $20 secretly pressed into their palm. She was a renowned storyteller and always told humorous, endearing stories to her grandchildren about their fathers.
Alice enjoyed a variety of interests, and was tenacious with hobbies she took particular interest in. She was a dedicated genealogist and invested countless hours tracking down census and courthouse records and other primary source documents to put together a historical record of the family she was so devoted to. She provided research to and helped author The Ancestors and descendants of William Clopton of York County, Virginia, a significant volume of genealogical and historiographic research of the Clopton family reaching back to the ninth century.
A visitation prior to service for Alice will be held Tuesday, October 25, 2022, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM with the funeral service immediately following Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at 10:30 AM at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Papillion. A graveside service will occur Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at 1:00 PM at Omaha National Cemetery, 14250 Schram Road, Omaha.
