He was the loving and caring husband of Margaret Mahoney. Meg and Peg were married
for 35 years until her passing in 1990. Together they raised 8 children and he is survived by
Sean (Mary), Brian (Mary), Kevin (Pamela), Sheila Doyle (Chris), Kelly Reid (Michael),
Glenn (Colleen) and 18 loving grandchildren and 1 great granchild. Two of his sons, Regan
and Neil predeceased him. He was the beloved Uncle to the Gallagher, Anderson and
McGillicuddy clans.
Later Walter spent 30 years with his life partner and best friend Sylvia Severance. Sylvia’s
family Alexander (Carver) Mark (Carol), Michele Black Wolfe (John), Eric (Sunny) and
Gayle, and her 9 grandchildren embraced Walt.
Walt was the only son of Irish immigrants Jeremiah and Chris Mahoney. His parents were
incredibly proud of him and cherished his many accomplishments graduating with honors
from St. Anslem’s College, his commissioning as an officer in the United States Marine
Corps, and loved when he came home to Winthrop or to Cape Cod with his large family to
sit around the table in the Irish tradition telling stories and singing “moonlight bay.”
Walter served his country seeing combat during the Korean War. Later in life, he embraced
his Marine Corps brethren organizing reunions, calling them on the phone for long talks and
writing a manuscript on the Marine Corps memories “Proud Fraternity.”
Walter enjoyed a successful business career working in the early years of the computer
technology industry. It was his career that brought him to Philadelphia opening the
Burroughs office here. He bought a house in Berwyn because he loved the dogwood tree
where he cherished time spent with his family and friends.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Katherine’s in Wayne, PA on Friday January 8, at 11:00am with internment at St. Monica’s cemetery in Berwyn, PA. Due to the pandemic the service is limited to family and
