Joyce Thomas Hoy, 92, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2023, to be with her Lord. She was born in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania and graduated from New Cumberland High School. She attended West Chester State Teacher’s College (now West Chester University) and graduated in 1952 with a degree in Elementary Education. Joyce met her husband, Robert J. Hoy, at West Chester and they were married on June 13, 1953. They lived in Berwyn, Pennsylvania where they raised their four children.
Joyce was an elementary school teacher for 24 years in the Tredyffrin-Easttown School District, mostly at Hillside Elementary School. She retired in 1989 to care for Robert when he was diagnosed with lung cancer. After his death in 1992, Joyce faithfully and lovingly gave her time, talents, care, and joyful spirit to whomever needed her or her expertise.
Joyce was a loyal and faithful member of Trinity Presbyterian Church for 46 years. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and led Christian Education for many years. She served as a Deacon, was a member of Miriam Circle and the Trinity Craft Fair committee. Joyce also tutored children with special needs, locally and at an after-school program in Chester, PA. She was a member of the Great Valley Women’s Club.
Along with teaching and helping others, Joyce loved entertaining family and friends, being outdoors working in her gardens or by her pool, sewing, crafting, traveling, and babysitting her grandchildren.
Joyce’s husband, Robert James Hoy and daughter, Colleen Hoy Cliffel preceded her in death. She is survived by three of her children, Beth Eileen (Everett) Fitzgerald, Robert Hoy, Kathleen (Paul) Koch; her five grandchildren, three great grandchildren and her sister, Beverly Clements.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on September 9th, 10:00am at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 640 Berwyn Avenue, Berwyn, Pennsylvania. Family visitation will be at 9:00am in the sanctuary prior to the service. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joyce’s honor to Trinity Presbyterian Church.
