Florence (Flo) Jurist, born Florence Mintz, passed away peacefully at her home on July 25, 2024 of natural causes and was 97 years young. She was the only child of Hyman and Sadie Mintz and grew up in a loving home. Florence completed her high school education and had dreams of becoming a nurse; however, she grew up during the Great Depression and it was necessary for her to go to work and help with family expenses instead.
Flo met her husband of 59 years, Nathan Jurist, while working at The Washington Baths in Coney Island, Brooklyn, which is where she grew up. Being an only child she dreamt of having a big family and was blessed with three boys and a girl. Raising her family in Woodmere, NY, Flo was a doting mother and was always there for her family.
Flo was a born entrepreneur and started up a variety of businesses – CaMar – a wallet company that she was able to get into Bloomingdales, a beaded baby bracelet business and her Shark Tank dream of Flozy’s Cozy Wheel, which only made it to prototype stage but of which she was super proud. When her children were older she went to work at Marvin & Sons Fine Jewelry in Cedarhurst, NY as a Salesperson and was awesome in that role. She had a very strong following of loyal customers who only wanted to work with her.
Flo was also very artistic and creative and enjoyed sewing, drawing and in later years sculpting gorgeous marble creations with rocks right from the quarry. She LOVED Mah Johng and looked forward to playing whenever she could. She also enjoyed an occasional game of golf.
Flo and Nat retired to Long Beach, NY and then to Lake Worth, FL for many years and loved the life they made there. She was extremely social and made friends easily. When she decided to move back North to be closer to family she moved to Whippany, NJ and reinvented herself again. “Elegance, Class and always put together” are ways people described her at every stage of her life.
Flo is survived by her four children and their spouses: Robert & Renee, Ken & Kristine, Jeff & Jeanne and Cathy & Bruce and a long list of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Donations in Flo’s memory can be made to: St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
