Father Thomas Kieffer was born on July 5, 1934 in Elkhart, Indiana. He became an attorney in Washington, D.C. After receiving the call to religious life, he left the law profession and was ordained to the priesthood in 1965 for the Congregation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in Monterey, California. He obtained degrees in Counseling Psychology and Religious Education and was sought after professionally as counselor and consummate religious educator and spiritual director. In the Diocese of Monterey, Father Kieffer was the chaplain of the hospital of Fort Ord and always at the service of the local parishes. He also served as the Promoter of Justice of the diocese for many years. Before retirement, he was the priest in charge of the Chapel and Catholic ministry at the Presidio of Monterey, Defense Language Institute.
Services will be arranged by The Paul Mortuary, 300 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove, CA. Viewing starts at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, May 24, with the Vigil and the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 pm at the mortuary. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday May 25, 10:00 am at San Carlos Cathedral, 500 Church St., Monterey, CA., with a light reception to follow.
