Dr. John Ridgely Goral died Sunday, April 23, 2023 with his family by his side after a lengthy illness. He was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin on July 19, 1948 and raised by his parents Anthony and Irene (Pragacz) Goral.
John graduated from Abbot Pennings High School in 1966. He graduated with a BS in Psychology from Purdue University in 1969. John then went on to The Ohio State University and after 3 years graduated with an MA and PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology.
After graduation, John moved to Washington, D.C. where he worked for the Human Resources Research Organization, the Defense Manpower Research and Data Analysis Center and the United States General Accounting Office.
John moved to Monterey, California in 1983 where he began working at the Naval Postgraduate School as well as the Defense Personnel Security Research and Education Center. He retired from the Defense Manpower Data Center in 2004.
John was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and enjoyed attending games in the same seats he did as a child growing up.
John is predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Irene Goral, sister-in-law Janis (Chapman) Prange and brother-in-law Lowell Wenger.
John is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sherry Chapman, daughter Ashley Goral Patania, son-in-law Giuseppe Patania, grandsons Giuseppe and Giovanni Patania all of Carmel, CA, sister Andrea Wenger of Canton, MI, brother-in-law the Reverend Anton Prange of Carmel, CA and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Bradley and staff as well as Dr. Ruth Trotter, John’s niece who he proudly referred to as his “Family Doctor”.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 2:00 PM at St. Philip’s Lutheran Church, 8065 Carmel Valley Road, Carmel, CA.
