J. Marshall Reeves, our devoted father and grandfather, has joined with Jesus and his family in heaven. His loving wife and family, after spending a treasured Christmas with him, were suddenly called to give him comfort and support during his final hours. After 85 years, his heart was ready to rest and allow our Savior to deliver him to a glorious eternity.
Marshall was born in Sugartown, Louisiana, the third youngest of 13 siblings, to his Mother, Brookie Lanier Reeves, and his Father, John Bunyan Reeves. Marshall and his wife of 65 years, Joan, were married on June 16, 1951. In addition to his wife, Marshall is survived by their children; Steven (Clover), Ronald and Timothy (Karen); six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two great- great-grandchildren. His loving daughter, Pamela, preceded him in death on August 2015 following a courageous battle with cancer. They are together in joy again.
Marshall, his parents, brothers, and sisters are all in Christ's kingdom. He and his family worked hard during the Great Depression in rural Louisiana where you bought your flour, sugar, and coffee, and you grew what you ate and you ate what you grew!
In 1946, Marshall and his family moved to Seaside. He was a hard and dedicated worker, beginning with the canneries and eventually landing a career with the City of Monterey. He was blessed with 38 years with the city, spending 33 of them as Superintendent of Parking in the parking division. He also served as the 1st President of the CA state parking convention. He retired from the city in 1989. He and his wife Joan also managed the El Rancho Mobile Home Park and Shopping Center in Marina for 51 years, finally retiring in 2011.
Marshall loved southern cooking, seafood and creole dishes. A rare rib-eye could always bring him a smile, but not as big as the joy his grandchildren brought to him.
Marshall became an ordained Southern Baptist minister in 1952 at 21 years old. He committed his life to providing service to others above himself. He was always there to help and thrived on using his mind and hands to the best. He led churches to establish missions and provided leadership to programs for the disabled, including the Salvation Army, Gateway Center, SCRAMP and the Lions Club. He supported the Hume Lake Christian Camps where he and his family and friends built and enjoyed their cabin for many years.
The funeral service will be held at The Paul Mortuary Chapel in Pacific Grove on this Wednesday, January 4 at 11:30 am. Viewing begins at 11:00 am. Burial will follow the funeral at Monterey City Cemetery. Memorial donations in Marshall’s name may be given to The Salvation Army, PO Box 1884, Seaside, 93955 or Gateway Center, 850 Congress, Pacific Grove, 93950.
Arrangements under the direction of The Paul Mortuary, Pacific Grove, CA.
