Ilse C. Poeschl was born on July 15th, 1931 in West Germany and was the eldest child of Josef & Elizabeth Czok. She had two siblings, Herbert (deceased in 1978) and is survived by her sister Christa Wendler. Ilse’s life went through many trials and victories in what she often said could only be described as a “movie”.
Ilse came from a prominent family and spent her early years in a lovely home on the French/German border. Then the war hit and their world turned upside down. They were forced to flee, but unfortunately for them they fled east. Ilse moved schools often between the ages of 10-16 and many times had very little to eat. For fun Ilse would make paper dolls for younger sister Christa and that’s when she discovered she could make a career out of designing clothes.
Ilse had incredible talent. After the war, she studied Art History and Fashion Design receiving her BA Degree from Staatliche Schule Fur Kunst Und Handwerk in Saarbrucken, Germany. She married William (Bill) Poeschl in 1956 and had two children, Carin and Thomas. She moved to Los Angeles in 1958 to join Bill who was working there. They moved to Marin County in 1960 and, in 1963, she began her career in Fine Art studying with several well-known Bay Area artists. Ilse was an active member of the Marin Society of Artists and was a charter member of the Terra Linda Art Association. An award-wining artist, she exhibited her art in several juried shows. Her paintings are in private collections in the Bay Area and Europe.
In the 1980’s, Bill and Ilse became very involved in collecting wine and were active members of the International Wine & Food Society. This brought them much joy as they attended gala events including trips to Europe on several occasions. After Bill’s death in 2013, Ilse tired of living all alone so she moved to the Monterey Peninsula with her son Tom and his wife Cheryl. She met many new friends through Tehama and left a lasting impact on all who met her. Ilse is survived by her children, Carin Powers, Tom Poeschl and her grandchildren,Tierney Powers, Billy Poeschl, Mike Poeschl, Quinn Powers and Matt Poeschl.
Ilse Poeschl was the epitome of grace, refinement and elegance. She appropriately departed us on “Memorial Weekend”, as she will never be forgotten. Her ashes will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband by close family members in September.
