Ed was born in Akron, Ohio to Ovid and Helen Dally and had been a longtime resident of Carmel. In the past, Ed also lived in the former USSR, France, Switzerland, and Belgium. He enjoyed traveling and learning new languages.
Ed received his BA and MA degrees at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He earned his Ph.D in physics from Stanford University in 1961. After graduation, Ed accepted a position at The Physik Institute in Zurich, Switzerland where he did nuclear physics research from 1961-1963. From 1963-1966, Ed continued his work at the University of Strasbourg in Strasbourg, France. Then he went back to Stanford and worked as a research physicist. In 1970, Ed became an acting associate professor at UCLA and was involved in collaborative research in Serpukhov in the former USSR.
From 1971-1976, Ed was an associate professor of physics at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. He then left the academic sector and went to Varian Associates in Palo Alto where he was a senior scientist and manager of new product development in the radiation division. From 1981-1989, Ed was the director of development at Siemens Medical Laboratories in Walnut Creek. The next two years, he was the vice president of CTI Cyclotron Systems in Berkeley. Another assignment with Siemens followed, from 1990-1993, which was a liaison with IBA in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium.
Professional affiliations include The American Physical Society and The American Association of Physicists in Medicine. Ed has published over 58 articles in scientific journals.
In addition to a busy career, Ed also found time to become a long distance runner. He has run over 100 marathons and numerous shorter distances. He was a founding board member of the Big Sur International Marathon and ran his last half marathon in 2012, at the age of 81. Ed was on the board of the Cypress Fire Protection District and volunteered many hours, working for Carmel schools, sports programs, and Boy Scouts.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers David and Donald. He is survived by his former wife Patricia Dally of Carmel, and their children, John Dally (Tricia) of Carmel Valley, David Dally (Margie) of Carmel, Pamela Dally-La Mica (Arlington) of Seaside, and Donald Dally of Carmel. He is also survived by his wife Christine Dally of Carmel, and their children, Matthew Dally (Miranda) of Denver, CO, and Rebecca Dally of Goleta, CA, as well as grandchildren: Brendan Dally of Frisco, TX, Aaron Dally of Nashville, TN, Brynn Dally of Carmel, Michael Dally of Carmel Valley, Regan Dally of Carmel Valley, and Genevieve and Evelyn Dally of Denver, CO. We will forever miss him.
A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date. Donations in Ed’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
