Survived by her two children, Jon Eric Kahn and wife Susan of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Kandyce Virginia Kahn of Prairie Village, KS; her sister, Myra Lynn Akins of Ft. Worth, TX; nephews, Mark Bradley Akins and Wiley Edward Akins and wife Catherine of Austin, TX and Cheney Akins of Ft Worth, TX. In addition to several cousins and many good friends.
Life is a river of adventures, Mary would say, and so her adventures began as a girl in the small west Texas town of Vernon where she attended grade school and graduated high school with honors. Attending college as an English Major at the University of Texas and a member of Kappa Delta Phi Honor society, Mary received a Teaching certification in 1941, again graduating with honors.
In 1943, with World War II still raging on, Mary was determined to do her part to win the war. She convinced the Commerce Department to allow her to apply to the Aircraft Communications training program if she could pass the entrance test. Pass she did and was sent first to an Air Base in the Texas Panhandle, Clarendon, and then to Lafayette, LA and the Galveston, TX and eventually ended up back in Ft Worth, TX. WWII ended soon after and Mary retired from public service, certain that she helped achieve peace and the end of war in 1945. This is one example of the many adventures she experienced throughout her long life.
Mary Virginia and Harry B. Kahn were married in 1949 in Ft. Worth, TX and had two children, Eric and Kandyce. During a long and successful Real Estate Appraisal career, Mary was the first woman VA Appraiser certified in Texas. She served on the Tarrant County Appraisal Review Board, served on judges’s appointed panel, hearing cases of Eminent Domain and taught Real Estate Appraisal classes. She held an SRA designation from the Appraisal Institute, was a member of National Association of Realtors, Texas Association of Realtors, Ft. Worth Board of Realtors and the Appraisal Institute. Also a member of the Dallas Women Business Owners and active in politics and social organizations throughout life.
When Mary retired in 2005, she moved to Prairie Village, Kansas to be close to her daughter and continued to enjoy many social activities and good friends for which she was truly grateful.
