James L. Tierney, 92, Leawood, KS, passed away April 22, 2014 in Kansas City, MO. Visitation will be from 9:30-10 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 1, at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 7023 W. 71st Street, Overland Park, KS. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice House or to Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
James served in the US Army during World War II in North Africa and Europe. He was an avid bowler for most of his adult life, and was blessed with many friends in this endeavor. James was a founding member of Tierney Stationery Company from 1946 until 2009.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Ruth, after 54 years of marriage, in 2002; his parents, George and Grace (Oliver) Tierney; three sisters, Margaret Tierney, Dorothy Mosley and Loretta Metzger; and two brothers, Charles Tierney and Robert Tierney. He is survived by: a daughter, Melissa Buchanan and her husband, Mike; two sons, Tim Tierney, and Darrell Tierney and his wife, Lisa; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
