Edith A. Hanke, born April 19, 1928, in rural Faribault County, Minn., to Oscar and Martha Holmen, departed this world in the early hours of February 9, 2014. The sixth of 10 children, she is survived by son, Marque L. Hanke, two granddaughters, Kindra L. and Katie M. Hanke, a myriad of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews and a vast network of friends. She was joined in marriage to Leo A. Hanke, Jr. in 1951. Edith and family relocated to Overland Park, Kan., in 1960. She became an early member of Overland Park Lutheran Church and remained a vibrant member for 54 years. She devoted her early life to raising her family, shuttling her children to various sports activities, acting as a den mother and Brownie leader, enjoying trips to Minnesota visiting extended family and fishing at the cottage. She considered herself an exceptionally lucky fisherwoman. Always busy, she loved sewing, often making outfits for her children and grandchildren, crafting holiday decorations, quilting, knitting and baking. After her children finished high school, she joined the Shawnee Mission School District as a paraprofessional, primarily working at Trailwood Elementary where she aided with Special Education. Through her colleagues at Trailwood she took up golf, developing a long lasting passion for the game. She joined Ladies 9-Hole Leagues at Overland Park and St. Andrew golf courses and was a keen competitor. She embraced becoming a grandmother, doting on her grandchildren constantly and often captivating them with her childhood stories of life on the farm. Her travels continued into her retirement years, when she and Leo traveled to Alaska and Hawaii. In 2002 she took a dream trip touring Europe. She was a strong woman of deep faith who enjoyed giving back to the community. Her home was always open to friends and family alike. She is preceded in death by her husband, Leo A. Hanke, Jr. and her daughters, Michelle A. Hanke and Marsha L. Hanke. She was a rock who will be profoundly missed by her family and many others. Visitation will be 5:15 to 6 p.m. followed by funeral services at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Overland Park Lutheran Church, 4810 W. 79th St., Overland Park.
