Carl Franklin York

Carl Franklin York, age 77, of Overland Park, KS, passed away August 18, 2010 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Merriam, KS. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 21, 2010, at McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, KS 66204 with a visitation at 10:00 a.m. before the service. Burial will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at Forest Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. Contributions may be made to: First Southern Baptist Church, 8600 W. 91st Terr., Overland Park, KS 66212. He was a dedicated member of the church and was an usher for many years. Carl was born June 24, 1933 in Rentiesville, Oklahoma to Jessie Dean and Edith A. (James) York. He moved from the farm to Kansas City when he was only 17 years old. He learned the trade of car body painting at a re-hab center in Kansas. He had lost an arm in a childhood accident. He worked for Felt Chevrolet before going to work for Westfall Trucking Company in Kansas City. Carl retired from Westfall Trucking. He had been a union steward with the trucker's union and was active in helping employees gain equal opportunities and pay increases. After retiring, he did volunteer work with Shawnee Mission Medical Center. He enjoyed working with the staff and making patients laugh at his jokes. He loved camping, fishing, golfing and pheasant hunting with his dog "Duke" in the Nebraska wheat fields. He and his neighbors were good friends, including Merta Stutsman, who was very special. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Mary Jean (Stroud) York and his second wife, LaVonne (Moore) York, and brother, Orville York. Carl is survived by his step-son: Randy Williams and wife Diana, one brother: Ortrie York, five sisters: Ruby York, Virginia Arnold, Dolores Townsend, Neva York, and Jewel Hall; 3 step- grandchildren and 5 step- great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
