Tom was beloved by partner Caroline and children Tom (Lynn), Patti (Dave), Christine (Rick) and Bill (Della). He will be greatly missed by grandchildren Kirsten (Jeremy), Michael (Brianna); Dylan, Riley, Madison; Jason (Jenna), Jordon (Ashleigh); Charlotte and Nicholas; and great grandchildren Elijah and Hazel. Leaves behind sisters Patricia and Janet, predeceased by brothers Gerald and Michael. Mourned by former wife Theresa, boyhood friends Bill and Ed and many Ottawa friends including Dave, Roger and Frank.
Tom was born in Montreal to Thomas and Louisa. He joined the Navy after high school, landing far-flung postings from Halifax to Churchill, Manitoba and Inuvik. He later worked for three decades at Canada's Communications Security Establishment.
Ever curious, Tom had a love for adventure, traveling the globe from Brazil to Romania, soaking up culture and languages along the way. He was an avid skier, hiker, cyclist, windsurfer and bird watcher, and in later years became a dedicated bridge player. Tom never stopped learning, and no day was complete without a cryptic crossword.
His true love was family, however, famously hosting Boxing Day brunch feasts for decades, serving up crab melts, tourtiere and smoked salmon while handing out scratch 'n' win cards.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023, 1pm - 3pm at eQuinelle Golf Club (140 Equinelle Dr, Kemptville, ON). In lieu of flowers, please donate to his favourite charities, The Ottawa Food Bank and Medecins Sans Frontieres.
