Russell Saunders

(Navy WW II veteran, aged 93 years)

Born in Carleton Place, ON on December 28, 1923 to parents Richard Arthur Saunders and Doretta (nee Dupont). Doretta passed away after giving birth to Russ. He was raised by his grandparents Albert Saunders and Minnie (nee Haerly). In 1939, at the age of 17, Russ joined the Royal Canadian Navy and was assigned to the HMCS Lanark. On April 5, 2017 at 12:33 am, at the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre, Russ peacefully passed away surrounded by his family and loving wife of 70 years, Doreen (nee More) of Almonte, ON. Beloved father of Kerry (Linda Corbin), Boyne (Marilyn Murphy), Suzanne (John Simpson), and Lori (Roy Heuving). Cherished grandfather of Shannon Maker (Mike), Logan Saunders Matte and Kayla Saunders. Great grandfather of Charlotte, Amelie, Sienna, August and Kase. Survived by his brother Arnold. Predeceased by siblings Albert, Lucille, Joy, Richard, Merwin, Shirley and Calvin. Loving son-in-law of the late Milton More and Elizabeth “Betty” More of Almonte, ON. Brother-in-law of Logan More (Jean), John More (Ruth), Ann Bourgoin, the late Laurie More and Bertram More (Bernice). He will be lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Russ may be made to Gracefield Christian Camp and Retreat Centre or to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Ottawa. Visitation at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road, on Sunday, April 9 from 1 pm to 3 pm followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 3 pm.
