July 26, 1955 – September 10, 2024
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Richard (Rick) Ernest Harrison on Sept. 10, 2024 peacefully at home. Rick was born in Ottawa on July 26 1955 to Ernest and Jean Harrison.
Rick met the love of his life Suzy Logue in Ottawa in 1977 while she had moved from Maniwaki Qc. to Ottawa to attend college. Sparks flew and they were married February 18th 1978.
They welcomed their sons Brent, (Melissa) Jason,(Renee) and Andy, (Stefanie). As a family they were strong, united and fun loving. Rick always loved having the house full and thought of his nephews as his own sons. Rick wouldn’t just stop at having a house full of family, he would encourage his boys friends to come over and was a dedicated Coach to all his children and children’s friends coaching hockey, baseball and any other sport that needed his assistance. Rick was a strong powerful man not only in physical stature but in personality. He often would be called upon to coach and mentor as a combination of his upbringing and career path made him approachable, relatable, and assertive. Tragically in 1999 Rick contracted a virus that ultimately left him quadriplegic. He leaves behind a legacy of teaching the world that you don’t give up, you don’t quit you push through and make the best of the circumstances you are left with.
Rick, was a dedicated Correctional Officer and proud ICIT member who made so many friends along that journey and formed special bonds with his co-workers that he thought of as family. He was legendary for cracking jokes, sporting shirt stains and being one of the kindest people you would ever hope to meet.
Rick was the chef, the protector, the handyman, the prankster and entertainer of the family both at home and at work.
Rick remained happy and in the family home for the entirety of his life receiving the best possible care.
Ricks greatest achievement was his grandchildren. Rick always wanted a daughter but had to wait a little longer where he was eventually blessed with 2 grand daughters. He leaves behind Logue, Emily, Owyn, Ayla and Jacob. Rick also enjoyed visits from his nephews John (Juliana) and James (Elizabeth) Ramsay, and their children William, Patrick, John Jr. and Lennon. He also appreciated the many friends and peace officers who, every year, supported a ‘golf day” as a fundraiser to help afford the exorbitant costs of keeping Rick in his family home.
In addition to family members mentioned, Rick leaves to grieve his beloved childhood friend/brother, Peter Casey, who for the past 67 years has attended every meaningful moment in Rick and Suzy’s life, his brothers- in law Michael, ( Sylvie) and Ken Logue, nieces Jennifer and Kimberley and his godchild, Kyle Harrison (Marie-Pier).
Special thanks to the many caregivers such as Dr. Rene Leiva and Dr. Ian Warrack that have helped, and supported Rick throughout his illness. Special thanks to the late Neville Thomas, his sister-in-law Louise Logue and PSW Latif Araoye, whose love, dedication and advocacy for Rick’s care and support was greatly appreciated.
A wake will be held for Rick at the McEvoy-Shields parlor located at Bank and Hunt Club on Sept 18 2024 between 2 pm - 4 pm and 6 pm - 8 pm
Until we meet again in the spirit world – rest well my love – you’re suffering no longer –
Love always and forever – Suzy xo
