Ken was born on July 25, 1960, in London, England. He passed away peacefully on April 21, 2024, after a lengthy illness. He is predeceased by his parents Edith Johnston (nee Doucet) and George Johnston, as well as by his brother, Richard Johnston and sister, Maxine Johnston. He is survived by his siblings Darlene Manning (David), Karen Randall (Michael), David Johnston (Joan) and Cynthia Johnston. He leaves behind his nieces and nephews, Gillian Manning (Mike Beking), Laurel Faiers (James), Kyle Shipman (Maeve Stinson), Brendan Manning, and Kaylah Johnston, great nieces and nephews Simon, Briony, Dahlia and Zion as well as many loving relatives and friends.
Ken was a kind, generous, resilient, and gentle soul with a quirky sense of humor. He had wide and varied interests including sports, music, cooking and nutrition. From a young age Ken enjoyed playing hockey. As an adult, he loved cycling and was an avid football and hockey fan. He especially loved the music of Led Zepplin, ACDC and Elton John. Later in life, Ken developed a joy of traveling but his journeys were cut short by the onset of health complications. In his last few years, Ken found joy in art and pottery, playing bingo and being the champion of many trivia nights. Ken was always willing to help his family and friends in every way that he could. His journey in life led him from Ottawa to British Columbia and back again where he worked in carpentry, restaurants and ended his working life as a chef in a day-care.
Ken will be missed by his family and friends. The family wishes to thank the nurses, doctors and staff at the Perley for their care and compassion during Ken’s final years. A private ceremony of life will be held for friends and family at a later date.
