Beloved wife of the late Henry Herbert Haw. Born to May Yoke and Jim Goon Wong, in Vancouver, BC.
Elva taught school in Taishan, China before returning to Canada at the end of WWII. She taught at the Mon Keang Chinese School in Vancouver and earned her qualifications as a hairdresser before she met and married Montreal restaurateur, Henry Haw. They were together for nearly fifty years.
Elva was active as secretary and then president of the Woman's Missionary Society at the Montreal Chinese Presbyterian Church. She loved dressmaking, knitting entire outfits for her daughters and herself. Elva enjoyed music, gardening, and her family.
She is survived by her two daughters, Corinne Yee (George); Beverly Leung (Lee). She will be missed by her 4 grandchildren, Amy Tsui (Denis); Matthew Yee; David Leung (Anna); and Jenna Leung and 2 great grandchildren, Hector and Olive Tsui.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2022 from 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home 1411 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa, ON. The funeral will be held on Friday, Sept. 30, 2022 at 11 a.m. at McEvoy Shields Funeral Home. She will be buried in Montreal, QC.
The family requests that donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Chinese Christian Church of Ottawa, the Montreal Chinese Presbyterian Church, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Ottawa Hospital Foundation.
