She is survived by her sister, Nella Swopes (USA). Predeceased by her mother, Angelina Quashie, father, Samuel Quashie and several brothers and sisters. Aunt of many. Other relatives and friends include the McIntosh Family (Carriacou, USA, Canada), Wilfred and Sylvia Orgias, Nugent Miller, Carole Fowles and Zenovia Shaw (Canada); Kersten (Junior) Coombs (Trinidad & Tobago) and Esther O’Neale (Grenada).
Cecilia was born in Belvedere, Carriacou. She obtained a Bachelor of Science (Economics) at the University of London in 1962 and immigrated to Ottawa in 1965, where she had a successful career of 20 years with Statistics Canada. She received her Master of Arts at the University of Manitoba in 1983 before retiring from the federal public service in 1985. Following her retirement, Cecilia returned to Grenada and worked as an Economic Advisor to the Grenada Government and a Consultant in Economic Planning & Project Analysis. In 2008, she returned to Canada and lived in Pickering, Ontario, until 2022, when she moved to Ottawa.
Cecilia loved spending time with family and friends; and enjoyed a wide range of activities. She was an avid gardener who participated in several flower shows organized by the Horticulture Society of Grenada, many times winning the `Blue Ribbon’ for 1st position. She was also passionate about researching and sharing information about the healing value of food and natural health products.
Cecilia played a leadership role in many local and international community development programs. She was a member of the Mentorship Advisory Committee of the Grenada Education and Development Programme. She served as President of the Soroptimist Club of Grenada on several occasions and represented them at International and Regional Conferences In 2004, Cecilia received a Lifetime Achievement Award for her leadership as a founder and tireless motivator of the Grenada-Broome County Partners (New York).
Friends and family are welcome to visit from 9:30am to 10:30 am followed by a service of remembrance at 10:30 am on September 16, 2022, at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Rd, Ottawa, Ontario, K1V 1A6.
