She was born July 12, 1928 in Oneonta, New York the daughter of the late Clark J. and Bernice (Fish) Sloan.
Joyce graduated from Otego Central School.
For 23 years, Joyce was a Secretary/Payroll Clerk at SUNY Oneonta until her retirement in 1988.
Joyce was an accomplished organist and played at Elm Park United Methodist Church and the Wells Bridge Methodist Church. She also played the organ at the Bookhout Funeral Home for a number of years.
Joyce was a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church; the Otego Order of Eastern Star #377 from 1953-1988 following the closure of the Otego Eastern Star, Joyce became a member of the Laurens Eastern Star #518 and in 1989 she joined the Oneonta Martha Chapter #116 Order of the Eastern Star where she held a dual membership. She was the “Grand Musician” in 1983 and 1988 and for several years she was the Secretary/Treasurer for the NYS Grand Musicians Association of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the NYS Civil Service Retiree’s Association. Joyce was one of the original organizers and the first President of the S.U.C.O. Golden Retiree’s Association.
Joyce is survived by her niece, Nan Morgan of Georgia; as well as a grandniece, Charlene Alfonso of Florida, grandnephews Brian Morgan of Florida and Kevin Morgan stationed in the military; and a dear friend, Bette Utter of Otego.
Graveside services for Joyce will be held on Friday, June 13, 2014 at 10:30am in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery with the Reverend Olu Harding Pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church officiating.
