Born: December 11, 1924 ~ Died: May 11, 2016
Leon arrived in Canada, leaving behind his beloved war torn Poland and family after WWII. He joined his wife Aniela who had sponsored his immigration. At Camp Borden he learned carpentry and English, was befriended and helped by many, including the MacDonalds of Angus. Leon made his way to Oshawa where he was able to establish a successful business in construction, building homes and apartments, determination, hard work and the good fortune of many associates of similar experiences and nationalities reflecting Europe and Canada. Life was good. Leon loved the outdoors, skiing, early morning fishing on Ontario lakes, Mexico, the Artic, or hunting in the beauty of Autumn, it was his favourite time for friends and adventure. The work ethic of Leon & Aniela was strong, devotion to their Catholic Faith was a source of pride and comfort. There were many return trips to Poland where Leon would rejuvenate , laugh and visit family. His heritage was very important and Leon supported St. Hedwigs, the Polish Alliance, Knights of Columbus and was a long standing member of the Durham Homebuilders Association. Leon was married to Aniela (predeceased) for 64 years. He will be sadly missed by his sons Richard and Edward, his grandchildren Ryan (Krista), Danielle and Justin (predeceased), his great grandchildren Ella and Jack and his daughter-in-law Elizabeth. He will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews in Canada the Lesniaks and Nizios, a brother in Poland Mietek (predeceased), sister-in-law Janina and many nieces and nephews. Leon enjoyed and used his authority with abandon often frustrating and infuriating those around, much to his amusement. That’s how he rolled and we loved him for it. Visitation will be held at the OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Monday, May 16th, from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9 p.m. Prayers will be held at the Funeral Home Monday at 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. HEDWIG’S CATHOLIC CHURCH (411 Olive Ave, Oshawa) on Tuesday, May 17 at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery.
