(April 9th, 1952 – May 3rd, 2017)
It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Joe at his home in the forest surrounded by family and friends. Joe was predeceased by his wife Vivian Varnum (2004) and his father Allan (2014). He leaves behind his mother Doris Wood, sister Cathy, and his two wonderful children Matthew (Andrea) and Kristen (Joe) and their mother Heather. Joe was so loved by Liesje de Burger, his partner and long time friend. Her family will miss their Joe. Joe lived life large and laughed hard and was giving and kind to so many. As a life time Kiwanian from 1974, he spearheaded many events, fundraisers, and leadership roles. In addition, Joe worked with and for many community organizations including Big Brothers and the United Way. Joe loved his sports. And he played them all. Tennis was a passion. He began playing at the Oshawa Tennis Club and then further honed those skills at the Boulevard Club in Toronto where he was a member for 30+ years. Joe had an extended family of friends there. His love for skiing began at the Oshawa Ski Club. Once competent, he went on to teach youngsters the wonderful sport. Golf…yes. He was an avid golfer, to put it mildly. Winters in Florida and regular trips to Myrtle Beach were important to him. His front yard putting green was a real source of pride. Joe even spent some time horse back riding, but that’s another story. As a pool shark, he quietly worked the table. Visitation will be held at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Tuesday, May 9th from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. and at ST. GEORGE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH (10797 County Rd. #2, Grafton) on Wednesday, May 10th from 10:00 a.m. until time of Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. Memorial donations to the Northumberland Hills Hospital or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Online condolences may be made at www.oshawafuneralhome.com
Joe loved his friends with a passion and was loyal and devoted to them all. There is a big hole in all our hearts and to quote Joe when he would leave, “…you be good.” Till we meet again Joe.
