I remember Mr. Cushing at Canadian Martyrs. He was so nice and an inspiration. I still remember things he said to me. My prayers are with his family. I remember his wife teaching us how to make candle holders out of baby food jars.

Mr. Cushing was the first principal at Canadian Martyrs in Oshawa where I attended grade 7 & 8. I remember him as a fair, fun and inspirational man who challenged us to do our best. After we moved from Oshawa I was working at our golf course and he appeared for a game of golf while he was taking a summer course at Queen's.  He was  and will always be a gentle giant to me.  My condolences to his family and friends.

We have fondest thoughts and memories of Jim.  He was an inspiration to all.

My prayers and thoughts are with you as you mourn. Here is my story of how this loving man touched my life:
Before his principal life, he was my grade 7 teacher at St. Christopher's. One who change my life by encouraging me. It was a public speaking contest, I had moved on to the divisional levels and wanted to quit. My mom made me call him at home to tell him. He talked to me and encouraged me to do my best and that I was going to do fine. I did speak. I didn't win but I remember being so emotional that I DID the task, that I competed at my best and that I COULD speak in front of a crowd. I have since spoken in front of crowds of 300 or more, joined Toastmasters International and continue to perform and speak in public. My daughter, now 11 follows in her moms footsteps as an excellent public speaker and performer. Thank You for touching my life with such impact. Karen Bradt Woolley (near Peterborough ON)

So sad to hear of your loss. Mr Cushing was principal at Father Venini while I was a student there in the 80s. I have very fond memories.

Jim will always hold a special place in my heart for his intelligence, humour, integrity and courage.  He was a man of vision and strength "when all around him were losing theirs..."  Rest well, dear friend.  You were/are the voice in my head.
