These are words I never wanted to write because as the saying goes, I thought we'd have more time. Doug was more than a father-in-law to me, he was a mentor, a friend to watch a game with, and an amazing Papa. The love he showed our boys is all that Heather described to me and more about how he was with Kristy and V. 

It's hard to imagine a world without a man whom I have known for over 20 years. Someone who has been to the rescue when we needed it, someone who showed love by doing more than with words, and when he spoke them you knew he meant them. A person who would drop anything if you needed it (unless the Leafs were playing then you might need to wait a minute for intermission). Doug was all that and so much more. I don't think there is a single piece of the house that hasn't been touched up, patched up, or replaced by Doug over the years. We always talked about how when he retired he would teach me more woodworking the way his Dad did for him. Now those are just memories of promises never to come and my heart aches at the loss of this man's skills, love, and care. 

I am sad that my sons have to grow up in this world without their Papa. I am hurt that they have been robbed of that joy. But I know that we will do everything to spoil them the way you never got to. To teach them the joys of fishing on a calm lake, the reward of building something with your own two hands, the beauty of the coast, and the smell of the salty breeze. They will always remember their Papa and what he stood for.

You will always be missed and forever loved Doug, rest now in peace, and know in your soul that everything you have built and loved will be taken care of.

Heather, Kristina and Victoria, our hearts are broken by Doug's passing and knowing the pain you are feeling.   We have so many wonderful memories from our decades of friendship.   We have grown up together and our kids have grown up together.   We have many, many,  wonderful memories of our time together.  Doug will be remembered for always being upbeat, smiling and so much fun to spend time with.  He was always the friend who was the first to pitch in and help with a project.  His talent in carpentry was something he shared to all. 
We have treasured memories of time spent together enjoying card games, bbqs,fishing, cottage time, meals and so many laughs.  I still believe the guys cheated in uno!   We will all miss Doug very much.  I will be watching for a dime because I know he will be sending his love from heaven.  Much love to you all.  John, Karen,  Brendan and Kate.

Heather and family,  we were devastated to hear of dougies passing another beautiful soul, gone too soon. We have some beautiful memories with him, here in Ontario and as well with the family in NFLD. I think everyone in our little town of 800 people knew Doug, lol. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Doug passing. I saw you guys a few years ago in Wasaga Beach and Doug came up to the stage to say hello. I think he wanted to come on stage and sing with me like he did many times before. I watched the service from California and it was wonderful but sad. The girls are so grown up now. Our condolences to Heather and Doug’s entire family. Doug was a great guy and was always “all in” to being part of the fun. He and our son Matt instantly became buddies and Doug was always there to encourage him in football or teaching him to cannonball. We always enjoyed his company, he will be sadly missed.

Doug was a great friend to my brother Bruce. However all the guys especially Doug became close friends of my family. My dad Gord always liked to see Doug when he came over to the house. R.I.P. my friend.

My sincere condolences. Every time I stopped at Doug’s desk asking for his help I came prepared with talking points just so I could prolong our conversations. His smile and his quiet laugh were a gift he generously shared with us all. The company logo changed regularly during Doug’s tenure but he never did. Doug held Finchdene together as much as the bricks and mortar and I am grateful for the pleasure of knowing him.

Mary-Lyn and I are so shocked and saddened to hear of Doug's passing. Doug was a special soul and loved by everyone. He was the hub of all our friends.  If you wanted updates on old friends, Doug would have it.  We are going to miss his random show ups and calls, happy go-lucky personality, and his infectious laugh. Heather, there are no words to express how sorry and sadden I was to hear the loss of your husband.  One of the storms we all must face in our lives is the passing of someone dear to our hearts.  I am so sorry you are facing this right now.

Heather, so sorry for the loss of Doug. He was a great football team mate back in our youth. Like many of us, he would have gone pro but for injury. I shed a tear when I heard of Doug's passing. The world has lost a good and moral man. I am sorry I cannot pay my respects tomorrow because I am out of country, so the best I can do is to send a virtual hug. Growing up with Doug through public school (Cameron Ave. , Willowdale JHS and Northview Heights SS) was always fun with lots of action. When Doug and I were about 8 years old - we had received our first set of junior golf clubs from our parents. Doug and I together played our very first round of golf at the Don Valley Golf Course ( located at the 401 and Yonge, which included walking through Gwendolyn Park, down the cow path, past the 8th hole towards the clubhouse. Green fees were about $1.25 back then. We were hooked after that first round and enjoyed many more games together over the years. Doug’s laughter,  love for life and respect towards his family and friends is who he was.  We love you Doug. God bless my dear friend. Rest in Peace.

Heather, please accept my condolences on the sudden passing of Doug.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.  Having been fortunate to have known both you and Doug since we were kids, my brother Len and I and the rest of our “boy-hood chums” have so many fond memories.  His love of “ghetto football” as we affectionately called it when we were kids played on the street particularly in the winter with snow on the ground.  His favorite saying “Len fumbled the ball” which caused ensuing big dog-pile tackles that he loved.  Of course, Doug usually came out the worse for wear with a cut lip or other aches and pains. In addition, many memories of how he loved golf and his patented ‘waggles’ of the golf club just before he would play his next shot.  And Heather as you remember how he fancied the annual P-Pot golf tournament that started with Doug, his father, my brother Len and my father Terry before it expanded to include myself, Richard and Tom.  Oh how he anticipated that day and of course how you Heather had to come and pick him up after making merry with the boys.  Regardless of what he was doing Doug always had that infectious laugh and was always a warm and good guy to be around. Will miss him.

Our hearts are filled with grief and sadness. This unexpected loss will leave with an empty place in all our hearts. But we know once we start talking and reminiscing all the Douglas stories, our hearts will fill up with happiness again. His smile and laugh filled a room.
