Janet L. Todras-Bernstein, 94, of Daytona Beach Shores passed away on November 21, 2022, in Daytona, surrounded by her family and longtime friends after a brief illness. Originally born in Manhattan, New York City, Janet lived most of her life in the suburbs of New York before moving to Daytona Beach upon retirement in the 1990s.
Janet was married to Morris S. Todras, also of New York. They met after World War II at the University of Florida, where they both graduated. After living several years in Florida, they moved to New York where they established themselves until her retirement. Morris passed away in the late 1970s.
Janet is survived by son, Jay (Amy) Todras; daughter, Ellen T Levine; granddaughters, Lindsay (Berto) Delgado, Molly Todras, Marisa Levine (Richard) Spencer; great-grandsons Landon, Noah; great granddaughters Ella and Reece. And a host of family and friends.
Janet was among the early pioneering women who demonstrated the capability and perseverance to fight to achieve a place in the traditionally male dominated workplace. Janet became a professional human resource, Head Hunter, who recruited management executives for Fortune 500 companies. She was honored with awards recognizing her successful achievements. She later ran a hotline whose mission was to help persons of all ages who were in crisis, and did not know where to turn. Through her understanding of people, the hotline routinely averted potential suicides, and was a resource to help those in the local community unable to find help on their own.
Janet later met Daniel Bernstein in New York. They both relocated to Daytona where they opened a successful custom sign and embroidery business, Gano Corp, which made signs and created special embroidery for bike week and college reunion weeks, as well as other special events. Daniel passed away in 2017.
Janet was the consummate people person. Anyone that knew Janet for more than a day will remember her friendship, and her kind and genuine manner of caring. She always continued to give, and to learn, as part of groups such as WILL, ( Women in Lifelong Learning) where she enjoyed great friendships. Janet was the “Countess” of the Peninsula condominium, where she became a part of committees to enhance the building and make friends along the way.
Janet will be missed as the kind spirit that she was. Janet packed a lot of caring and energy in her small frame. Those that knew her really well will miss her voice and strong will, the strongest advocate for her friends and family.
A funeral to commemorate Janet’s life will be held on December 16, 2022, at the Volusia Memorial Funeral home at 548 North Nova Road, Ormond Beach on December 16, 2022, at 2 pm with a Gathering of Family and Friends from 11 am until time of service at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home
