Entered peacefully into eternal rest to be with his Savior on Feb. 5th after a courageous battle with lung cancer, COPD, and a paralyzed vocal chord.
Devoted, beloved husband of I. Marie Sherman, loving father of Jill Razinha of Harwich, and Jack Sherman (wife Yasuyo) of Sherman Oaks, CA. Loving and proud grandfather of Tanner, Colton and Landon Ellison of Harwich. He was their “Pa.” Loving brother of Suzanne Dupont of Centerville.
Born: In Middleboro, Mass. April 5, 1931 to the late Henry and Gertrude Sherman.
Stepson of the late Russell G. Dupont .
Education: Middleboro Public Schools, Senior Class President, 1948. A gifted athlete, Bob was Captain of the baseball, football, and basketball teams. Attended
Monson Academy and Norwich University. Graduated from Jack Rossiter Baseball School in Cocoa Beach, Florida to pursue his love of baseball. He signed on with the Minor League clubs of the Washington Senators as a southpaw pitcher, playing in the minor leagues in TN, NY, KY, and FL for several years, and then Semi-Pro Baseball in Minnesota. He played for the Yarmouth Indians town team before the current Cape Cod Baseball League was formed.
Bob met Marie on a summer romance 54 years ago. The romance lasted and they were married over 53 years ago in Mansfield, Mass. in 1959.
Bob worked as a top Display Advertising Salesman for the Cape Cod Times from 1960 until his retirement in 1981 when he went into gardening/landscaping until 2007, spending his last 15 working years groundskeeping at Thirwood Place. He worked tirelessly to keep “Old Glory Homestead’s”extensive grounds carefully groomed.
Bob was a humble man with a quiet sense of humor who cherished his family and loved being outdoors. He was an excellent Little League coach. He was an accomplished furniture refinisher and made a hobby of finding bargains at yard sales. He also knew how to run successful yard sales and brought pleasure to those who attended his interesting sales over the years. He looked forward to weekend and longer trips with Marie, and especially the time spent at Torsey Lake in Maine when the family would come up making precious memories together – fishing, canoeing, playing board games, lobster feasts, yard sales, church suppers, and much more.
Bob attended Brewster Baptist Church and always enjoyed Pastor Doug Scalise’s sermons. He will be missed by many, and our family gatherings will never be the same, but we were blessed to have him in our lives for so many years. We believe he is at peace, and joyful to be “home.”
Marie, Jill and Jack wish to thank all those who have shown incredible kindness during this difficult time, including family, friends, Dr. Timothy Herrick and staff, and Hope Health Hospice.
