Affectionately known as “Pahka” to family and close friends, John was born in Mt. Kisco, NY, to Ruth and J. Everett Sarles, he graduated from Brown University and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy for two years. He began his career at J. Walter Thompson in New York City, then spent the majority of his career at The Reader’s Digest in Pleasantville, NY, serving on the frontlines of the corporation’s adoption of computer technology.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley of over 65 years, and is survived by three children: Cindy (John), Jay (Sharon) and Richard (Suzanne); seven grandchildren: Rebecca (Pablo), Pamela Kate (David), Molly, Thomas, Meghan, Caitlyn, and Brendan; three great-grandchildren: Penelope, Leonardo and Paloma; as well as 17 nieces and nephews.
John became an avid runner in his mid-40s, completing 5 New York City marathons. A deep thinker and consummate philosopher, he loved chess, Sudoku, golf and ice cream (especially from Kate’s). John was a steadfast advocate of Self-Realization Fellowship, following the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda, and meditated for hours each day throughout his life. His combination of inner peace and “insurmountable wit” will be missed tremendously.
John will be interred at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA with his wife Shirley; forever residents of their beloved Cape Cod. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
