Jan was born the daughter of the late Louis and Elizabeth (McAllister) Gilzean in Johnstone, Scotland. She grew up in Bridge-of-Weir and was educated locally before attending Camphill School in Paisley. Jan worked for the Stoddard Carpet Factory in Elderslie as a color and design assistant, but harbored aspirations of seeing what lay beyond her local area. At the age of nineteen, she emigrated to the United States, staying with relatives, and found employment as a receptionist at Fairlawn Hospital in Worcester, MA. She met her husband, Arnold “Tim” Weller, at a get together with common friends, and in 1960, they were married. She settled with him in Rutland, MA, where Tim grew up, to raise their family.
Jan was a generous and warm person with a good sense of humor. She felt very welcome in Rutland, which in many ways reminded her of her own hometown, and was embraced by Tim’s family and friends. She enjoyed socializing, fondly remembering attending local dances with her husband. Jan was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, which she pledged in 1963. She valued her circle of friends and the memories they shared. When her siblings and parents emigrated to the area, she felt a missing piece of her life had been restored.
Jan was an active person. She took up tennis as an adult, was an avid player for many years, and a long-time member of the Paxton Tennis Club. In later years, when she and Tim purchased a place in Brewster, she took up golf, which soon became a passion. She was a long-time member of the Women’s 9-Hole League at the Captain’s Golf Course in Brewster and not only enjoyed the golfing competition but also their get-togethers off the course. Yet above everything else, Jan cherished her family. She was always there to provide support and encouragement to her husband and children, and was a loving grandmother.
Jan was predeceased by her husband, Arnold “Tim” Weller Jr. of 60 years; and leaves three children, Bruce Weller and his wife Mo of Singapore, Craig Weller and his wife Dana, of Melrose, MA, and Kimberley La Rosa and her husband Riccardo, of Brewster, MA; six grandchildren, Thomas and Mark Weller, Madeline and Alexander Weller, and Dylan and Matteo La Rosa. She also leaves a sister, Isabel McKinlay, and her husband Arthur, of Rutland, MA, and a brother, Ronald Gilzean, and his wife Natalie, of New Harbor, ME, as well as many nieces and nephews and extended family who will miss her dearly.
