Edith Alger Schade formerly of Newport, RI died on October 10th in Brewster, MA. Edith C. Schade, 91, died after a short illness. Edith was a 1938 graduate of Rogers High School and a 1943 graduate of Newport Hospital School of Nursing. Upon graduation she entered the Navy and was a veteran of WWII
serving from 1943-1947.
While in the Navy, she continued her education at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Nursing and furthering her education proved to be a lifelong pursuit. After marrying and raising three children, Edith returned to college and earned her Bachelor degree in nursing from Rhode Island College.
In 1947 at the end of WWII, Edith returned to Newport and married Marine Captain Alfred J. Schade of New York. They were married at St. Augustine Church in February 1947. Three children came along very quickly and all were raised in Barrington, RI. While in Barrington, Edith was active in local politics, church, and community activities. She was a member of St. Luke's parish and the Third Order of Carmel.
Professionally Edith ended her career as the Director of Nursing for the Emergency Unit at The Miriam Hospital in Providence. Upon retiring, Edith returned to her Newport roots in 1984, and remained there until 2010. For the last two years she resided at Epoch Assisted Living at Brewster Place on Cape Cod near her eldest daughter.
Edith Schade is survived by three children: Terence Schade of Santa Rosa, CA; Elin Slavin of Brewster, MA; and Claire Tague of Annapolis, MD. She also leaves three grandchildren, 2 nieces, 3 nephews and their families throughout the country.
She will have a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at Our Lady of the Cape Church in Brewster, MA followed by internment at St. Columba's Cemetery in Middletown, RI.
