Catherine "Cathy" Sommers passed away peacefully at her home in Vero Beach, FL on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at the age of 84. Cathy's radiant smile, unflagging energy, and enthusiasm for life will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Cathy was genuinely interested in the lives of those she met, remembering to ask about experiences and events, big and small. She brought so many into her warm circle.
The daughter of Benjamin and Loretta Peyser and sister of Robert Peyser, Cathy was born on May 10, 1939. After attending Great Neck High School, she graduated from Bucknell University in 1961, where she met her husband of 62 years, John Sommers. Cathy and John spent their early years raising three sons in Huntington, NY before relocating the family to Weston, MA in 1976. There Cathy sang in the Decibels, a local singing group, and was a member of the Weston Public Schools Arts Council. In the late 1980s Cathy earned her real-estate license and with Wilmot Whitney Real Estate of Weston helped dozens of families find their dream homes.
In addition to her loving husband, Cathy is survived by her three sons, Jack, Bob, and Ken Sommers, their wives Anna, Karen, and Marina, her nine grandchildren: Kelsey (husband Rob), Tom (fiancee Flo), Ben, John, Olivia, Bobby, Kendall, Katerina, and Nikita Sommers, and great-grandson, Jamie.
Cathy devoted herself to her many close friends and family. She had a deep interest in helping children in Haiti and served as a board member of Aid International, which provides housing, food, and education to those in need. Cathy also served on the John's Island Foundation, which supports non-profits in Indian River County, FL. As an 18-year survivor of pancreatic cancer, she was a comfort and inspiration to others battling the disease. An enthusiastic tennis and mahjong player and adventurous traveler, Cathy loved the ocean and walks on the beach and she never took a sunset for granted. Cathy was truly a force of positivity and her light will remain with the many she touched and loved.
A Memorial Mass for Catherine will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at St. Joan of Arc Church, 61 Canal Rd., Orleans, Massachusetts 02653. Burial will be held privately.
