Evelyn Murray, La Cantina’s beloved matriarch, passed away at 84, on October 20, 2016 in Newport News, Virginia. Her funeral service will be held at the First United Church of Christ, 4605 Curry Ford Road, at 11:00am on Monday, October 31, 2016, with Pastor Leigh McCaffrey officiating. Immediately following, friends will be welcomed at a reception hosted by the family of Linda’s La Cantina Steakhouse. The burial will be at Glen Haven Cemetery for immediate family. Baldwin-Fairchild Conway Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements. Evelyn was born in New Haven, CT to Michael and Margaret Paczowski in 1932. She married Calvin Murray in 1951 and they moved to Orlando, Florida in 1956. She waitressed at Gary’s Duck Inn for several years and in 1961, at the age of 29, she went to work for the La Cantina and never left. She was a Christian woman who loved not only her immediate family but her work and church families, as well. Evelyn loved bowling, gambling, cruising, doing word searches, reading murder mysteries, watching old movies, getting together with her “Mary Martha” friends, and knitting baby hats for the Winni Palmer Children’s Hospital. Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 54 years; her brothers, William and Michael; and her sister, Dorothy Rix. She is survived by her brother, Edward; her daughter and son-in-law, Tamara and Stephen Cooper; her granddaughter and husband, Amy and Stephen Carroll; her granddaughter, Kimberly Fuller; and three great-grandchildren, Leslie and Beau Carroll, and Khloe Ferrell. The family wishes to thank the Palliative Care Unit of Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News for their support during her final days.
