Canute Arthur Marriott was born in Kingston, Jamaica on April 7, 1943 to Ethburn Marriott and Verna Wilson. As a young child, Canute could be found working in his father’s furniture store, building and restoring furniture. He loved working with his hands which later led him to open his own upholstering business. He continued expanding this business until he migrated to the United States in October 1970. He lived in Brooklyn, New York and again worked with his family member, Gig Young, in his bakery and Chinese restaurant business. You may be surprised to know but he was an excellent Chinese cook! His favorite dish to make was Ham Choy and Pork. In 1972 Canute met and fell in love with Beverly Philpotts. They were married on June 1, 1974. This union produced 3 daughters: Megan, Mallory and Melanie. In 1973, Canute was given the opportunity to work in the commercial construction industry and soon became a Master Plumber. He excelled in this trade and quickly became the Project Manager for building sites such as the world Trade Center II, Time Warner Building, South Street Seaport and the refurbishing of Grand Central Station, to name a few. In the early 1980s, he became a member of the Independent United Order of Mechanics Western Hemisphere, Inc., rising to the rank of Illustrative Grand for Loyal Progress Lodge #34 in Brooklyn, New York. In 1989 he and his family relocated to Orlando Florida. His love and dedication for the Lodge prompted him to be instrumental in the founding of Mizpah of Orlando Lodge #4 in February 1994. In 2008 he was elected to the Florida District Grand Lodge #1 which he faithfully served and at the time of his passing he held the rank of Senior Deacon. He loved to travel and his favorite destination was London, U.K. He loved sports and even though he lived in Orlando, Florida he was loyal to his New York teams: The Mets, The Jets and the Knicks. He also loved cricket and in his early years he was a mean left-handed bowler. Another passion of his was horse-racing and while living in New York, on any given Saturday afternoon, he could be found at the Belmont Race Track playing the ponies, mostly the ponies played him. Canute was an avid music lover which is well documented by his extensive record collection. Canute, affectionately referred to by his family and close friends as Ken or Kenny, is survived by his wife Beverly; his daughters, Megan, Mallory and Melanie; 5 sisters; 10 brothers; many nieces and nephews and a host of other family members and friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
