and LaNelle Ferguson Strother. He graduated in 1955 from New Hanover High School,
Wilmington, North Carolina. After graduating, Lamar wished to serve his country and was a proud
member of the U.S. Army from 1956-1959. In the army, he explored his love for music and joined
the 440 Army Band where he played the French Horn. Additionally, he achieved many noteworthy
feats such as making 12 military parachute jumps at Fort Bragg and wearing the wings of a
parachutist for three years. After his time in the army, Lamar went on to graduate from East
Carolina University, in Greenville, North Carolina in 1984. He then worked for Seaboard Coast
Line Railroad for 34 years as a Clerk.
During his life, Lamar achieved many great things. He ran one 26.2-mile marathon in Gainesville,
Florida. Ran eighteen 18-mile races at Ormond Beach, Florida and he ran about 20 miles a week
when he was an active runner. Lamar had a true passion for fitness. He was also a charter member
of the Jacksonville Track Club at Bolles School for 32 years. Additionally, he was on the Board
of Directors of the Jacksonville Track Club for 43 years.
Lamar also held a steadfast dedication to his beliefs and became a charter member of the Little
Chapel on the Boardwalk at Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, a Presbyterian church. Further,
he was an usher at Riverside Presbyterian Church for over 50 years where he worked as a Deacon
for over 10 years. Lamar dedicated his life to serving others. He owned a home in Jacksonville for
37 years and when the street drain in front of his home would clog from debris after a torrential
rain, he would take his time and clear the way. To help those beside him, he knew no bounds.
