Rose Emily Markland Bryant

Rose was the second child of Esbert and Maud Markland of Kingston, Jamaica. She attended St. Ann Catholic School in Kingston, Jamaica. During the Second World War, she opened a private elementary school in Kingston. She instilled the importance of reading, writing and arithmetic. Rose was an active member in the church choir, played piano and taught piano lessons. Rose immigrated to the United States in 1944 to New York City. Shortly after, she met James Bryant and they fell deeply in love and were married. He predeceased her in 1959.

Rose attended City College in New York. She was fluent in Spanish and was the interpreter for the International Ladies Garment Union and a shop steward, as well. In 1964, she went to work for the Social Security Administration and retired in 1976 as a supervisor. She was commended for her service to the Hispanic inquirers in the community.

Rose and her sister, Mavis, relocated to Deltona, Florida, where they purchased a home together. Mourning her are her niece, Aurora; nephews, Joseph and Winston Dalley and two generations of nieces and nephews, friends and loved ones.

Friends may call on Friday, May 25th from 6 - 9 pm at Deltona Memorial Funeral Home, 1295 Saxon Blvd., Orange City, FL, 386-775-4260. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 26th at 11 am at the funeral home with Pastor William Bradley officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Deltona Memorial Gardens in Orange City.
