Charlotte Ann Whitwell Nelson, 75, of DeLand Florida went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 27, 2022. She was born in Ada, Oklahoma on December 23, 1946 and followed the Lord in believer’s baptism December 23, 1952. She married John W. Nelson on Valentine’s day - February 14, 1975 and became a mother in 1980.
Charlotte was a creative and funny woman with a servant’s heart. As an active member of Volusia County Baptist Church for 20 years, she loved the Lord, had a heart for Missions and God’s people. Christian Service was at the core of her passions as Charlotte touched the hearts of many as a Children’s Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Adult Women’s Bible teacher over the years. She often used her talent as a painter to reach others in cards, gifts, VBS decorations and in the impressive backdrops for ‘The Journey Thru Christmas’ celebration at Volusia County Baptist Church.
Her personal mission statement was a challenge of “Was I saved to sit or serve?”
Before she became a mother, she was on the forefront of nuclear medicine. She taught Nuclear Medicine Administration at Harvard University in Massachusetts for two semesters before helping to found and design Baptist Women’s Medical Center. There in Jacksonville, Florida she helped countless women through education, early detection, and treatment for cancers.
In her spare time Charlotte loved the water and nature that is reflected in her artwork. She used to sail and saltwater fish. Once, she caught a shark off the coast. It was in Jacksonville she met her husband through mutual friends in a disastrous dinner. That weekend, during a group jeep adventure through the swamp they fell in love.
Charlotte will be missed by her family and friends who loved her dearly. She will be remembered by her loving husband John W. Nelson of 47 years, her daughter Anna Nelson Clements (Thad Clements) and her brother Lewis Whitwell (Elizabeth Whitwell).
She is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Thelma Whitwell and her granddaughter (Elizabeth-Charlotte Clements).
