He was born June 20, 1922 in Oneonta the son of the late Horatio Thomas and Edith (MacIntosh) Powell.
Jim was a member of the Arabian Knights Tumbling Club. He enjoyed touring all over the country and performing.
Jim graduated from Oneonta High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Force during WWII. He was the crew chief of a B-24. He served in the Pacific Theater and flew a reconnaissance mission over Japan.
Following his honorable discharge, he began working at NY Tel as a switchman. In 1984, Jim retired after 40 years of service.
On June 28, 1941, Jim married Janet Dales in Oneonta. Janet predeceased him on December 10, 2010.
One of Jim’s greatest passions was his camp on Piseco Lake. Jim was always one of the first ones to open the camp for the season and one of the last ones to shut it down. He enjoyed hosting the many family get-togethers, weddings and anniversary parties. He also loved being in the outdoors at the lake whether he was hunting, fishing or snowmobiling. Following his retirement, Jim and Janet began traveling extensively. Every fall they would take a trip to the Outer Banks, NC. Being a History buff he loved taking trips to Gettysburg and Williamsburg. Jim and Janet were always traveling to see Carol no matter where she was living. But one of Jim’s greatest vacations was the family trip to Hawaii. He talked about it often.
Jim is survived by his two children, Carol Powell of Castle Pines, CO and David and Amy Powell of Peru; three grandchildren, Jason Powell, Carah Powell and Mary Perry; as well as several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Stephen Powell, sister, Wanda St. John and three brothers, Harry, Francis and Donald Powell.
