Gary was a well-known local musician who, from the age of 14, played guitar and rhythm guitar in many local bands. Gary played with his parents, musicians Bud Robinson and Eva Cook Robinson, at countless barn dances and school dances throughout the area. He also played in many local bands alongside Alan Hotaling, Len Price and Charlie Hughes. Although his mother taught steel guitar lessons and Gary was a great musician, he never learned to read music.
Gary was also a self-taught luthier who shared his passion for music by restoring musical instruments. He did this to help local parents have access to instruments for their children so kids would become interested in playing music. Established musicians also sought Gary out for instruments and repairs.
Growing up in Oneonta, Gary was a Boy Scout who loved fishing, hunting and trapping from an early age. He served in the National Guard, worked at Linn Coach, drove a school bus, and was a private contractor.
Gary met his partner in life and work, Jan Richards, in 1980. She was dancing with another guy when his friend told him "You've got to see these guys dance." Gary's reputation had preceded him with Jan too. They were always together in everything that they did: working on construction projects for family and friends, taking down trees, and driving around looking for bargains and treasures. Gary loved to bargain and he waged a very hard bargain. Shoppers at Gary and Jan's Mount Vision "garage sale" benefitted from the fruits of their picking, finding treasures including golf clubs, musical instruments, antiques, baseball collectables and useful household items.
Gary and Jan welcomed family and friends to play croquet on Sunday afternoons and Gary loved playing cards. Gary was a gentle soul, with a twinkle in his eye and a ready smile for everyone. He was a friend to all and he was blessed with many, many dear friends.
He is survived by his fiancé, Jan Richards; son, Gary Jr., (Cheryl Bullis); grandsons, Joseph William Robinson; Roy Richards and Karl Richards; Jan's sister, Carol Cox who cared for and supported him during his illness; and countless extended family and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Bud Robinson and Eva Cook Robinson; and son, Samuel Frank Robinson.
The family thanks the supportive staff of Helios Care.

A celebration of Gary's life will be held this summer.
