Alice L. Barbin Colwell

Alice was born on January 26, 1924, in Oneonta, the daughter of the late Raymond and Leona (Utter) Barbin. She was a graduate of Oneonta High School in 1941. In June of 1943, Alice married Robert Colwell in Oneonta and celebrated 33 years of marriage until his passing in 1977.

She was employed for over 40 years as a sales clerk at Kresge’s, Woolworth’s, and Family Cleaners.

She was a very devoted mother and grandmother who never missed a family get-together. Alice really loved spending time with her family and not a birthday ever went by without getting a card from grandma.

She was a very active resident at Nader Towers for over 16 years, serving on many of the community’s boards and programs. She was also a devout member of the River Street Baptist Church of Oneonta.

Alice is survived by her children, Roberta Spina-Marrotta and her husband, Frank, of Whitesboro; Donna Simons of Oneonta; Richard Roberts of Oneonta; Sue Ann Roe of Oneonta; and her son-in-law, Allen Schmidt, of Mound, Minnesota.

She is also survived by 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; her brother, Donald Barbin, of Cortland and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Alice was predeceased by her daughter, Carol Schmidt; her grandson, Robert Schmidt, and her sister, Doris Moore.

Friends and family may call from 11am to 12pm on Thursday, October 11, 2012, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be held at 12pm on Thursday, October 11, 2012, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, Pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.
