Dick was born in St. Louis, MO on November 6, 1940 to Russell and Anita Rassfeld. Dick is an Eagle Scout and spent more than 20 years in scouting as a child and adult, as well as many years supporting the troop sponsored by Faith-Westwood UMC. He received a BS in Forestry from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1963 and worked for the Missouri Conservation Commission prior to attending Officer Candidate School at Newport Rhode Island. In 1964 he was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Naval Reserve. After additional training at Pensacola, FL and Lowery AFB he was stationed at Fleet Intelligence Center Pacific at Pearl Harbor, HI where he met Cheri (Young) Rassfeld. In 1968 he and Cheri were united in marriage, and they had two children Torrey and Kristin. In 1972 he was transferred to Omaha to work on a project at Strategic Air Command, he later changed companies and stayed at SAC/STRATCOM until 1999 when he retired.
Dick and Cheri were married for 28 years before Cheri passed away in 1997. They both were busy with work, Dick at SAC and Cheri as a preschool teacher at Mustard Seed, but the most important time they spent was with their children as they grew up. Dick and Cheri spent many years camping, skiing, and traveling with their children. They were very active in both their church and scouting.
After Cheri passed, Dick met Barb Wall and in 2002 they were united in marriage. Dick and Barb lived in Holiday Island, Arkansas from 2002-2015. In 2015, the pull of children and grandchildren back in Nebraska prompted them to move back to Omaha. During their marriage, Dick and Barb enjoyed traveling to places like Alaska and Hawaii as well as many other locations to visit family and friends. When not traveling, visiting with his children, or attending grandchildrens events, Dick stayed busy with his Monday night beer call and his Friday afternoon prayer group. Throughout his time in both Arkansas and Nebraska, Dick created so many friendships that were such an important part of his life. He loved all things trains, as well as birdwatching and could often be found on his back deck watching and identifying local birds.
Dick is survived by his current wife Barb, son Torrey Rassfeld (Kelly) and daughter Kristin Miller (Andrew). Barbs children Jen Lienemann (Mike), Stephanie Schade (Brent), Matt Wall (Kristina). Grandchildren Treyson, Kaeding, and Treven Rassfeld. Hallie, Dane, Brett, and Declan Miller. Ben, Ellie, and Abbey Lienemann. Alyssa and Isaac Schade.
